NSA to address Trump’s genocide claims

The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and top security chiefs are set to brief the media today in response to United States President Donald Trump’s threat to deploy troops to Nigeria over allegations of genocide against Christians.

The briefing aims to provide clarity on the Nigerian government’s stance regarding Trump’s claims and the country’s security situation.

The Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA) Mallam Lane Issa-Onilu disclosed this at the monthly National Joint Security Press Briefing aimed at updating the media on the ongoing activities of government to contain insecurity and other vices.

Issa-Onilu said the briefing will provide adequate response to the allegations of genocide.

The face-off between US President Donald Trump and the Nigerian government over the Christian genocide claim has escalated tensions between the two nations.

Trump recently designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to alleged widespread killings of Christians, prompting a strong reaction from the Nigerian government.

The government has vehemently denied Trump’s claims, describing them as “inaccurate and not reflective of the true security situation in Nigeria”.

Earlier, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted that religious freedom has not been impeded in the country, and Christians are free to practice their faith.

The government has also emphasised its commitment to fighting terrorism and protecting the lives and rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith. Meanwhile, Trump’s threat to deploy troops to Nigeria or carry out air strikes has raised concerns about the potential consequences of military intervention.

The Nigerian government had warned that any US military action must respect the country’s sovereignty. The situation highlights the complexities of international diplomacy and the potential risks of military intervention.
