The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has strongly condemned the brutal assault on a female corps member by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern, with many calling for justice.
In a statement, NYSC Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, described the operatives’ actions as “unacceptable and dehumanizing.”
The NYSC management expressed sadness over the incident and emphasized that the vigilante group’s conduct was indefensible, regardless of their reasons for investigating the facility where the corps members were staying.
The NYSC appreciated the public’s concern and noted the initial measures taken by the Anambra State Government. The corps management assured the public that it supports the ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police Force, aimed at unraveling the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring justice for the victim.
The statement reads, “The Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) strongly condemns the unacceptable and dehumanising manner in which the operatives conducted their operations, irrespective of their initial justification for the purported investigation they set out to carry out at the facility where the Corps Members were accomodated.
“While appreciating the concern of the general public over this horrific incident, as well as the initial measures taken by the Anambra State Government, Management wishes to assure the general public that it believes in, and supports the ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police Force towards unravelling what transpired.”
The NYSC has initiated administrative procedures to assist the corps member in managing the physiological and psychological trauma resulting from the incident. The corps management reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and security of corps members nationwide.
