OAU mourns loss of teenage medical student

The Obafemi Awolowo University community has expressed deep sadness over the loss of an 18-year-old year three medical student, Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, who reportedly died in his sleep on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, quoted the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, to have described the incident as “deeply painful and distressing”, noting that the university community is united in grief over the loss of a young life filled with promise.

“The loss of a young life filled with promise, purpose, and potential is a tragedy that words alone cannot adequately capture,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor assured that the university is working closely with relevant authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding Timilehin’s death, following established medical procedures.

He added that the university is also providing support measures to assist students and staff emotionally affected by the tragic loss.

“At this moment of collective mourning, we University calls on students, staff, alumni, and friends of the institution to remain calm, compassionate, and prayerful, and to uphold the values of empathy and solidarity for which the Great Ife is renowned,” the statement added.

Bamire also said the university is committed to upholding the values of empathy and solidarity for which OAU is renowned. The university committed Timilehin’s soul to the hands of Almighty God, praying for strength and comfort for those mourning his loss.

According to reports, Timilehin’s roommate stated that he had opened the door for one of their colleagues around 2 am, but was found to have passed away later.

The news sent shockwaves across the university with many struggling to come to terms with the loss of a promising young life.

Timilehin, who was 18 years old, had matriculation number CLI/2022/133.
