Oborevwori leads as more PDP govs set to join APC

Ezekiel Awojide, Abuja

The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progress Congress.

His defection is the first among other governors of the former ruling party who are preparing to leave the troubled party.

With this development, all speculation about Oborevwori’s defecting to the APC has been put to rest.

Announcing the defection in Asaba on Wednesday, Sen James Manager, who addressed journalists after a meeting of the PDP stakeholders in Government House said a formal declaration would be made on Monday.

He said that the governor’s defection to the ruling party was for the interest and the overall development of Delta state.

According to Manager, the entire PDP structure in the state had been collapsed to the APC.

Given the current development, Delta State is now an APC state.

Present at the briefing were Oborevwori, the immediate past governor, Ifeanyi Okowa; the Speaker of the state house of assembly, Emomotimi Guor; and other PDP stalwarts.

NewsTellers gathered that there are at least three other governors of the PDP who are preparing to join the APC.

Sources within the PDP said its leaders are worried about the gale of defection rocking it, adding that the refusal of its leadership to settle their differences is affecting its fortunes.

The authoritative source said, ‘‘At least, three other governors may leave our party before the end of this year or early in 2027. We are worried because even our governors who are yet to join the APC are already campaigning for President Bola Tinubu when the President has yet to declare his intention.

‘‘We suspect two governors from the southern region may move and another from the northern region. Those who dare to stay may not even work for the PDP during the presidential election.

‘‘The PDP is saying the President isn’t doing well, yet its governors are defecting to the President’s party. Does that make sense? We may not have solid opposition before 2027. It is sad.’’
