The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the explosion in a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, on Christmas Eve, describing it as “another sad reminder of the rising insecurity” in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Comrade Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the party, the PDP expressed its commiserations with the families of those who lost their loved ones in the attack.
“This is totally unacceptable; the irreducible minimum the government should offer its people is the protection of lives and property.
“This administration has failed woefully in this respect and should rise to the occasion rather than resort to rhetoric and playing politics with security.”
The PDP official emphasized that the attack on the mosque is a violation of the constitutional right of Nigerians to freely worship, and if left unchecked, it will create an atmosphere of fear that threatens the very fabric of the country’s religious society. “No one should lose their life while worshipping God,” Ememobong said.
The statement called on the Federal and State Governments to take immediate and practical steps to protect citizens throughout the yuletide season and beyond. “Nigerians deserve more than empty promises and political rhetoric,” Ememobong stated. “We need concrete, actionable security strategies deployed on the ground.”
The PDP expressed its disappointment with the government’s response to the escalating insecurity in the country, saying it has become “unbearable” and must be confronted with urgency and seriousness. “This escalating insecurity has become unbearable and must be confronted with the urgency and seriousness it deserves,” the statement read.
The party’s statement is the latest condemnation of the government’s handling of security in Nigeria, with many calling for more effective measures to protect citizens from terrorist attacks and other forms of violence.
The PDP’s call for action comes as Nigerians celebrate Christmas, with many hoping for a peaceful and secure holiday season. The party’s statement serves as a reminder of the security challenges facing the country and the need for the government to take decisive action to address them.
