PDP confirms death of Bayelsa dep gov Ewhrudjakpo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is mourning the “sudden loss” of Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, who passed away after a collapse earlier on Thursday.

In a statement, signed by PDP’s National Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party confirmed the death of the deputy governor.

PDP praised Ewhrudjakpo as a “consistent politician” of integrity and principle, whose life was marked by conviction and strong character.

The party expressed “inexplicable loss and indescribable pain” over the sudden departure of a man described as a “trusted, faithful party man.”

“He was a person of conviction, not convenience,” the statement read, highlighting his leadership anchored on belief and virtues he held until his last moments.

The PDP National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, extends heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State, mourning the “painful and irreparable loss” of a “hero of political integrity.” The party prays for eternal rest for his soul.

The statement added that the “devastating news” left the “National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and indeed the entire membership of our great party, especially our faithful members in Bayelsa State, in profound grief”.

PDP expressed heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State on “this painful and irreparable loss”.

According to reports, the deputy governor collapsed while at work and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa earlier today at age 60.

Ewhrudjakpo was a seasoned Nigerian politician and public servant. Born on September 5, 1965, in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, he held multiple academic qualifications, including degrees in secretarial administration, business administration and law, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2009.

He also earned a PhD in Human Rights and Labour Law.

Before serving as deputy governor, Ewhrudjakpo was elected to represent Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, a position he held from June 2019 until February 2020.

He became deputy governor on February 14, 2020, serving under Governor Douye Diri.

During his tenure, he was actively involved in promoting government initiatives across sectors such as agriculture, health and professional development.
