PDP will rescue Nigeria’s ailing democracy, Damagum vows

The factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, has vowed that the party will rescue Nigeria’s democracy, which he warned is currently under serious threat.

Damagum made this statement on Friday in Bauchi, assuring that the PDP is positioned to restore stability and protect the will of the people ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He expressed worry over what he described as deliberate attempts to undermine the nation’s democratic institutions.

“Nigeria’s democracy is facing challenges ranging from poor governance to insecurity and economic hardship. The country urgently requires political intervention,” he said.

He noted that as the leading opposition party with national presence, the PDP remains committed to rebuilding trust in democratic structures and safeguarding citizens’ rights.

Damagum also disclosed that preparations for the party’s National Convention are progressing smoothly and without internal conflicts, adding that the event will be a defining moment for both the PDP and the nation’s political direction.

He called on Nigerians to rally behind the party to reclaim the country from what he termed misgovernance, adding the PDP’s commitment to accountability, economic rejuvenation and improved welfare for citizens.

“Democracy thrives only when citizens stand up to defend it. The PDP will continue to reach out across all levels to ensure that our democratic system is not only protected but strengthened,” he added.

Recall that a faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday, announced the suspension of Damagum, and five other members of the National Working Committee.
