The Ogun State Police Command has addressed claims surrounding a viral TikTok video alleging a violent sexual assault, stressing that the complainant was not arrested when she first reported the incident.
The controversy started on Sunday when TikToker Mirabel (@mirab351) posted a disturbing video alleging she’d been sexually assaulted at her apartment.
In the clip, which quickly went viral on social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter), she alleged that a stranger had broken into her home while she was unconscious, physically assaulted her, and raped her.
Mirabel alleged the attacker sent threatening messages, and in her distress, she attempted suicide, triggering a wave of outrage, sympathy, and demands for justice following her viral video.
The incident, initially believed to have occurred in Lagos, prompted responses from Lagos State authorities, but was later confirmed to have taken place in Ogijo, Ogun State, shifting jurisdiction to the Ogun State Police Command.
As Mirabel’s video went viral, some social media users claimed she had been arrested, hinting she might have fabricated the assault story due to inconsistencies in her account.
The Ogun State Police Command moved to quell the rumours, with spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stating on X Thursday that Mirabel voluntarily presented herself at the Ibafo Police Division on Wednesday to file a formal report.
After initial assessment, she was taken to Ogijo Division, the relevant jurisdiction, where it was found she wasn’t in a fit state to provide more information.
According to the statement, “She was immediately taken for a comprehensive medical check-up, and her health is being closely monitored, as her wellbeing remains paramount. At no time was the victim arrested.”
The police emphasised that the matter is being handled professionally and urged the public to rely on verified information.
Babaseyi added, “The Police are handling the matter professionally and urge the public to verify information through official channels before dissemination.”
