Security operatives raid Malami’s Abuja home hours after Atiku’s visit

Security operatives on Monday stormed the Abuja residence of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in a dramatic development that has heightened tensions around his ongoing trial.

Malami, who is currently facing prosecution over alleged money laundering, had only recently regained his freedom after being granted bail by a court. His case is part of a broader anti-corruption crackdown targeting former public officials.

Earlier in the day, the former minister received a high-profile visit from leading figures of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. The visit was widely interpreted as a show of political solidarity amid Malami’s legal troubles.

However, just hours after Atiku and other ADC chieftains departed, security personnel arrived at Malami’s residence, reportedly attempting to carry out an enforcement action linked to the ongoing investigation.

In a video circulating online, Malami was seen confronting the operatives, questioning the legality of their actions.

“Where’s the court order you have to mark my property? Are you trying to embarrass me or what?” he demanded, still dressed in the same outfit he wore while receiving his visitors.

Details of the operation remain unclear, including the specific agency involved and whether the officers had obtained the necessary legal authorisation.

The incident comes against the backdrop of Malami’s ongoing trial, which centres on allegations of financial misconduct during his time in office. While he has denied any wrongdoing, the case has drawn significant public attention due to his former role as the nation’s chief law officer.

Observers say the timing of the raid—coming shortly after a politically symbolic visit by Atiku—could further fuel debate over the intersection of law enforcement and politics in Nigeria.
