President Bola Tinubu has charged the newly appointed Service Chiefs to be proactive and innovative in tackling emerging security threats in Nigeria, saying, “Let us smash the new snakes right in the head.”

In a speech at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu congratulated the Service Chiefs on their appointment, emphasising the importance of their role in ensuring the peace and security of the country.

Tinubu noted that security is a fundamental aspect of human need, and without it, development is meaningless.

He commended the military for their past efforts in defending the nation’s territorial integrity and reclaiming occupied territories from terrorists and armed marauders.

“We have restored peace to many areas previously under siege, rescued countless kidnapped citizens, and significantly diminished the capacity of the terror groups,” Tinubu said.

However, he expressed concern over the emergence of new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South, and charged the Service Chiefs to be decisive and proactive in tackling these threats.

The President urged the Service Chiefs to be innovative, pre-emptive, and courageous, and to deploy technology where necessary to stay ahead of those who seek to threaten the country’s peace.

“Nigerians expect results, not excuses,” Tinubu said, adding that he would provide all the support needed by the Service Chiefs to get the job done.

Tinubu also acknowledged the sacrifices of the military, saying “I sincerely appreciate your sacrifices, as I have repeatedly acknowledged.”

The President wished the Service Chiefs success as they take up the challenge, and prayed that God would continue to keep the armed forces safe.
