Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week following traders’ failure to comply with the state government’s directive to disregard the Monday sit-at-home order.
The decision, announced on Monday, affects the popular commercial hub widely regarded as one of the largest markets in West Africa.
The state government had earlier directed traders and businesses to continue normal activities on Mondays, as part of efforts to restore economic stability and end the disruption caused by recurring sit-at-home observances.
Engaging some of the traders he met at the market, Soludo anyone who is not ready to abide by the rules of the government to open their shops on Monday should leave Anambra and go elsewhere.
“The rules are that markets are opened from Monday to Saturday, if you’re not prepared to open your shops from Monday to Saturday, then leave Anambra State and go elsewhere.
“This market will be shut down for the remaining days of this week. It will not be opened on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, it will open again next week Monday,” the governor declared.
