A former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has stated that he will not team up with coalition opposition, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar because he believes they are not truly committed to fixing Nigeria’s problems.
During an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, the politician claimed they are more interested in personal gain than real change.
He claimed many politicians are in opposition simply because they could not get in with the ruling party, implying it is about access rather than principle.
According to Sowore, many opposition figures are not serious about tackling Nigeria’s real issues and might even make things worse if they get power.
He said, “I’m interested in being opposed to the system, but I’m not interested in joining opposition that is not opposed to the rot and the destruction that have been visited upon this country.
“I cannot be in opposition with the people whose only agenda, whose manifesto, whose demeanour is to come and loot, destroy and render this country as one of the worst countries in the world. That is not opposition to me.
“That might be opposition for the sake of opposition or for the nomenclature of opposition and that’s what has been our position.”
The activist emphasised that the country’s real opposition is not politicians, but everyday people – youths, the unemployed, and workers struggling without proper labour protections; adding that they are the ones truly opposed to the system’s failures.
“People have been cheated, the weak and those who are oppressed; that’s the opposition we need, that’s a solid opposition that we are driving and we want to drive,” he said.
Sowore also called on Nigerians to remain committed to efforts aimed at transforming the country, urging them to join what he described as a broader movement for change.
“We call on Nigerians not to look back in joining this opposition because that would open up the country to you, in a way that would bring about peace, prosperity and progress, which is what everybody is looking for right now,” he added.
