Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has shared details of his recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

According to Sowunmi, who spoke on Monday, during an interview on Channels Television, the meeting centered around key issues affecting the country, including insecurity in the North, the emergency rule in Rivers State, and the impact of government policies on citizens.

Sowunmi, who boasted to have being a vocal member of the PDP since its inception in 1998, clarified that the meeting was not an indication of his defection to the ruling party.

The politician said, “Nigerians are funny people. This party was registered in 1998. I’ve been standing in this party since ’98. I have one handshake, one visit to the president, whom I’ve known since ’94. And you think I’m gonna just leave my party? No, let’s get to serious things. It doesn’t work that way.”

“You cannot insist that decamping is the same thing as a visit,” Sowunmi said, adding that, “If I want to decamp to the APC, I’m quite able to do that.”

The interviewer further asked, “So, you’re not decamping?” To which Sowunmi answered, “I’m not at this time.”

The PDP stalwart expressed concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria, questioning whether the system is truly working for the people.

“After about 27 years in democracy, and I’ve been very active, it gets to a point where you start asking the question: is this democracy even working?” Sowunmi queried.

He added that beyond being opposition members, people must be willing to listen to the president without biases to ascertain if his government is working or not.
