Sports festival: Ogun waste agency begins special operations

The Ogun State Waste Management Authority has begun a special 24-hour operations ahead of the 22nd National Sports Festival tagged: ‘Gateway Games 2024’, holding in the state.

The operation, which will last till the end of the festival, is aimed at keeping the state clean in view of the expected numbers of athletes, officials,visitors, and tourists.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on OGWAMA, Abayomi Hunye, all personnel and the machineries of the agency have been deployed to ensure a successful operation aimed at keeping the state clean, healthier and safer from all environmental encumbrances before, during and after the festival.

Hunye stated, “To achieve this, day and night operations for 24 hours daily have begun with the aim of mopping up all wastes from every part of the state as well of desilting of all road verges for cleaner environment.

“All private sector waste participants servicing all communities in the state have been mobilised and have embarked on extra trips to take care of all domestic and public wastes so that there will not be any backlog of waste anywhere in the state, while the government’s compactors have also been deployed to complement their efforts.

“For competition venues spread across the state, arrangements have also been put in place not only to move waste, but to pick all refuse that will arise due to human activities while sweepers are to work in shifts to clean the venues.

“The sweepers will also work in shifts to keep clean all the highways, state and street roads statewide.”

Hunye called on visitors and tourists visiting the state to be careful while driving and look out for OGWAMA caution signs as its workers would be on 24 hours special operations performing their statutory duties on the roads and streets across the state.

He also called on residents of the state to keep their environment clean as they are used to doing, containerize their wastes so as to make it easier for the PSP operators to collect and dispose properly.

While reiterating OGWAMA’s resolve to midwife a clean, healthy and safe environment during the Gateway Games, Hunye used the opportunity to welcome all athletes, officials, visitors and tourists to Ogun State.
