No fewer than two people died during a violent clash that happened at the popular Balogun Market on Lagos Island on Wednesday.

In viral videos circulating on social media, a man who appears to have been attacked with a machete is seen lying motionless on the ground.

Another video shows a man, identified by witnesses as a suspect, stripped naked and reportedly lynched by an angry mob.

While the cause of the unrest has not been officially established, eyewitnesses offered conflicting accounts to Guardian Newspaper.

Some believe the violence was the result of a cult-related confrontation, while others allege it stemmed from an inter-tribal dispute between Yoruba and Igbo traders.

In the aftermath of the violence, shops were hurriedly closed as traders and passersby sought safety.

At the time of this report, security operatives had not yet released an official statement on the incident.
