There’ll be consequences for rigging 2027 elections, Obi warns

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has insisted that votes must be properly counted in the 2027 election, warning that anyone who attempts to undermine the process will be held responsible for damaging Nigeria’s democracy.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Obi said Nigerians would no longer tolerate situations where valid votes are disregarded in the electoral process.

Obi said the era of elections where results are manipulated must end, stressing that every vote cast in 2027 must reflect the true choice of the people.

He encouraged Nigerians to stay at polling units after voting to witness the counting process and ensure accurate result transmission.

The former Anambra governor also cautioned that those who frustrate the counting of votes or engage in rigging would face the full weight of the law, adding that such actions amount to destroying the country’s democratic future.

He wrote, “Our Votes Must Count

“Unlike in the past, in 2027 our votes MUST count, and all those who are there not to count the votes will be counted among those destroying Nigeria. I encourage everyone to remain at the polling units after voting to count and witness the counting and transmission of results.

“Those who refuse to allow the votes count will be made to count the full weight of the law against rigging. Let me reiterate: if you do not count our votes, we will count you among those who destroy our democracy, thereby destroying our future, and you must answer to the law. -PO.”
