Tight security in Kaduna as ICPC, DSS arraign El-Rufai

There was a heavy security presence on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Kaduna North Local Government Area as authorities prepared for the arraignment of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Armed operatives, particularly from the Department of State Services (DSS), took control of the court premises early in the day, restricting movement in the surrounding area. Parts of the adjoining dual carriageway were cordoned off, leaving only a single lane open to traffic as security checks intensified.

El-Rufai is expected to face charges linked to alleged cybercrime and threats to national security. At the same time, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is prosecuting a separate case involving alleged corruption.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, John Okor Odey, the anti-corruption agency disclosed that the charges include alleged unlawful possession and diversion of public assets, as well as money laundering. The commission further revealed that an additional case involving El-Rufai and another defendant has been filed before the Kaduna State High Court, bordering on allegations such as abuse of office, fraud, and granting undue advantage.

Both matters were instituted on March 18, 2026, forming part of the ICPC’s broader anti-graft campaign.

El-Rufai, who governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent and controversial political figures. A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under President Olusegun Obasanjo, he built a reputation for pursuing aggressive reforms, particularly in urban development and public service restructuring.

However, his tenure as governor was frequently marked by criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups over governance style, security challenges in Kaduna, and allegations of financial mismanagement. In recent months, tensions have escalated following accusations and counter-accusations between El-Rufai and federal authorities, with the former governor denying any wrongdoing.

The current legal proceedings are therefore seen by observers as a significant moment, not only for El-Rufai’s political future but also for Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption efforts and the accountability of high-ranking public officials.
