President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who cited family reasons for stepping down.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, will hand over to Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police effective immediately.

In a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday, President Tinubu expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, acknowledging his dedication and professionalism.

Egbetokun was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027.

President Tinubu cited the current security challenges facing the nation as a reason for appointing Disu, who he believes has the experience and leadership capacity to provide direction for the police force during this period.

The President plans to convene a Nigeria Police Council meeting to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring the police force remains professional and equipped to discharge its responsibilities.
