This was contained in a post via X by President Tinubu on Wednesday, where he said it would mark a historic moment as the Games have never been held on African soil in their 100-year history.
He wrote, To the Commonwealth Family,
“It is time for Africa. After 100 years of the Commonwealth Games, they have never been hosted on African soil. By bringing the Commonwealth Centenary Games to Nigeria in 2030, you will send a powerful message that every region of the Commonwealth matters, and that Africa is not only part of the story, but central to its future.
“Nigeria is the gateway. Africa is the stage. The Commonwealth is the family. Let us make history together in 2030. Let us complete the circle of Commonwealth unity.
“The dream must be realized. The time is now.”
The Commonwealth Games, a multinational, multi-sport event, has a rich history dating back to 1930. The first Games, then known as the British Empire Games, took place in Hamilton, Canada, with 11 countries and 400 athletes participating. The event was conceived by Melville Marks Robinson, a Canadian sports journalist, to promote unity and understanding among the nations of the British Empire.
Over the years, the Games have evolved, changing their name to the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, the British Commonwealth Games in 1970, and finally, the Commonwealth Games in 1978.
The event has grown significantly, with more countries and athletes participating, and a wider range of sports featured. Today, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) comprises 54 member nations, making it one of the largest international sporting events.
The Commonwealth Games have played a significant role in promoting athletic excellence, cultural exchange, and friendship among nations. The Games have also provided a platform for athletes from smaller nations to compete on the world stage, fostering a sense of community and cooperation.
With its rich history and commitment to promoting unity and sporting excellence, the Commonwealth Games continue to be an important event in the international sporting calendar.
