President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the senate’s confirmation of the newly appointed service chiefs.

The request was contained in a letter read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

According to the letter, the nominees are: Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Waheedi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye.

Akpabio directed that the nominees be referred to the Committee of the Whole for screening and confirmation next week, after the letter was read.

The President held a closed-door meeting with the newly appointed service chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, discussing key matters affecting the nation’s security and defence sector.

President Tinubu had earlier sacked Nigeria’s former service chiefs, including Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, in a major military shake-up aimed at strengthening national security.

The move has sparked mixed reactions, with some seeing it as a step towards improving security, while others question the motivations behind it, especially given recent coup rumors.

The presidency attributed the sack to efforts to inject new direction, vision, and energy into the military leadership, while critics call for transparency and accountability.
