The Kogi State Government has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s advocacy for the establishment of state police, describing it as a generational reform with the potential to revolutionise Nigeria’s security structure.

Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, issued a statement on Thursday praising President Tinubu for reiterating his administration’s commitment to decentralising policing during a meeting with state governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The statement noted that President Tinubu stressed the need for state police to tackle Nigeria’s security issues, saying it would boost community policing, intelligence gathering, and overall internal security.

The Kogi State Government said President Tinubu’s stance supports National Assembly discussions on the laws needed for state police, calling it a bold and timely move.

Fanwo said the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo fully supports the President’s vision and remains committed to reforms that bring security closer to the grassroots.

He characterised the state police initiative as a resolute measure likely to substantially mitigate insecurity nationwide, further noting that the proposed decentralisation of policing aligns with the Federal Government’s comprehensive economic, institutional, and financial reforms.

“As a government, we fully align with Mr President’s position and assure him, as well as the leadership of the National Assembly, of our readiness to cooperate with all relevant authorities to make State Police a reality,” the statement said.

The Kogi State Government further stressed that sustained collaboration between federal and state authorities would not only address immediate security threats but also lay a solid foundation for lasting peace, stability, and socio-economic development across Nigeria.
