Activist Omoyele Sowore has slammed United States President Donald Trump for praising Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, at a prayer breakfast in Washington DC, calling it “shameless hypocrisy” that defines global American politics.
Trump had publicly recognised Tinubu during the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, February 5 at Washington, D.C.
The US president described her as a “very respected woman” during the 74th Annual National Prayer Breakfast held on Capitol Hill.
Trump drew attention to Mrs. Tinubu in the audience, highlighting her role as a Christian pastor in one of the largest churches in Nigeria.
“We are honoured to be joined by the First Lady of Nigeria (Remi Tinubu), who also happens to be a Christian pastor at the largest church in Nigeria, very respected woman, it’s a great honour. Thank you very much,” Trump said.
This comes after Trump designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged attacks on Christians in October 2025.
Reacting on Friday in a statement posted on his Facebook page, Sowore accused Trump of using faith for propaganda purposes, particularly in relation to allegations of Christian persecution in Nigeria.
“Oh I heard it, it is exactly the kind of shameless hypocrisy that defines global American politics today. Donald J. Trump praising ‘singing’ Remi Tinubu at his Washington DC prayer breakfast is not faith, Trump has no faith in anything but the power of money,” Sowore said.
He continued, “Trump and his business neocons scream ‘Christian genocide!’ for propaganda purposes, but the moment money changes hands, the ‘perpetrators’ suddenly become VIP guests receiving standing ovations.
“That’s the power of fraudsters, they weaponise religion when it helps them, then auction the same religion to the highest bidder.”
