The factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has made a dramatic appeal to the international community, including US President Donald Trump, to intervene in the country’s democratic process.
Turaki, addressing newsmen on Tuesday claimed that democracy is under threat in Nigeria, citing the current standoff at the PDP National Secretariat.
“I want to call on President Trump, democracy is under threat. I’m calling on all other developed nations, all advanced democracies, come and save Nigeria,” he said.
The PDP chairman accused the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of attempting to create mayhem at the party’s headquarters. “I don’t understand why a serving Minister of the Republic of Nigeria will be leading armed thugs and with the support of the police to create mayhem here,” Turaki alleged.
Turaki reiterated his faction’s commitment to defending the party’s office and democracy, saying, “We are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect our democracy, to protect our mandate.”
The appeal comes as tensions escalate at the PDP National Secretariat, with rival factions clashing and police presence deployed to maintain order. Turaki’s faction is seeking to assert control over the party, while the opposing faction, led by Wike, is contesting their authority.
The international community has been urged to intervene, with Turaki stating, “Nigerians, you are watching what is happening. International community, you are seeing the threat that Nigerian democracy is facing. Come and save us.”
Earlier, Turaki praised the police for its role during the Tuesday morning clash.
