Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has explained his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for political alignment and support for President Bola Tinubu’s agenda.
Recall that the governor had earlier in the week, announced his defection from the main opposition party to APC.
During a ceremony at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday, Governor Fubara explained his switch from the PDP to APC, stating his aim was to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election efforts, as he received his APC membership card from party chairman, Chief Tony Okocha.
Governor Fubara described his decision as a “spiritual assignment,” emphasising that joining the APC would foster a strong working relationship between Rivers State and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“As you have said, this is indeed a spiritual assignment because it concerns the safety, progress, and growth of Rivers State.
“We cannot pursue a different direction when the President is pursuing another.
“Joining the APC is part of our commitment to ensure a seamless working relationship and to contribute meaningfully to his reelection efforts in Rivers State,” he said.
Governor Fubara expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the warm reception, noting that his decision to align with the APC was made in the interest of the state’s stability and development.
He further pledged to strengthen the APC in the state, assuring that the party structure, members, and executives would receive his total support.
“This is now your home, Mr Chairman. You are welcome here anytime. We will keep the APC active and fully functional in Rivers State, and every need of the party will be taken care of,” Governor Fubara affirmed.
The membership card was presented to Governor Fubara by Rivers APC Chairman, Tony Okocha, at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday.
