Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has drawn parallels between Nyesom Wike’s appointment as the FCT minister and historical precedents, emphasising that serving in an opposition-led government is not unusual.
Speaking during a recent interview with AF24News, Fayose pointed out that notable figures, including Bola Ige and Ebenezer Babatope, served in governments led by opposing parties.
“Bola Ige was in the same situation, Ebenezer Babatope too, they all served in the government of the opposition,” he noted.
Fayose aims to normalise Wike’s decision to accept a ministerial appointment, arguing that it’s a strategic move rather than a betrayal of party principles.
Fayose also opened up about his political stance, revealing why he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite overtures from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said, “At 65, it is better for me to back off than to continue to jump from one bed to the other.” He emphasised his loyalty to PDP, stating that he would never join APC.
Fayose praised Wike, saying, “I’m a Wike’s person, and till tomorrow, I’m a Wike’s person. There’s no denying. I don’t pretend.”
He highlighted their shared commitment to speaking truth to power and defending justice.
The former governor criticised PDP leadership, warning that the party is in trouble due to its own actions. “PDP is in trouble because of their own making,” he said, citing the party’s handling of internal disputes.
Fayose also questioned the independence of the judiciary, accusing a judge in Oyo State of being biased.
He said, “The judge in Ibadan is a ‘chop-I-chop judge, I’ve said it in the newspaper, because that judge wants to retire.”
He insisted that he and others expelled from the PDP at the Ibadan Convention remain bonafide members of the party, dismissing the authenticity of the convention.
