Abeokuta to host women’s legacy event in honour of Ẹgba icons

Abeokuta is set to host an inspiring and historic celebration of womanhood, culture, and leadership as the Iyalolomo Initiative prepares to hold its landmark event on June 10, 2025, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Tagged “Iconic Motherhood: A Narration of the Roles of Efunroye Tinubu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Bisoye Tejuoso,” the organisers say the initiative aims to rekindle national appreciation for the indelible contributions of prominent Ẹgba women while promoting the empowerment and development of today’s women in all spheres of life.

A statement issued by Prof Yemi Oke, a copy of which was made available to NewsTellers, said that the event will feature keynote addresses, discussions, cultural events, and an awards ceremony that will recognise outstanding Nigerian women who embody the legacy of the matriarchs being celebrated.

The statement read in part, “Iyalolomo is not just another women’s program; it is a movement. It is built on the belief that the stories of powerful women—especially those from marginalised and historically overlooked communities—deserve to be told, honored, and used as tools of inspiration.

“The stories of Iyalode Efunroye Tinubu, a formidable 19th-century businesswoman and political strategist; Chief Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the fearless anti-colonial activist and pioneer of women’s rights in Nigeria; and Iyalode Bisoye Tejuoso, a titan of industry and traditional leadership, are not just historical—they are deeply relevant for our present and future.

“The event seeks to inspire a new generation of Nigerian girls and women to rise in leadership, business, activism, and governance.

“With dignitaries, traditional rulers, policymakers, community leaders, and women-focused NGOs expected in attendance, the Iyalolomo Initiative is setting a new benchmark for purposeful cultural programming in Nigeria.”
