The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has denied engaging in a supremacy battle with any monarch, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.
In a statement released by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin described himself as a custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition who prioritises the safety and welfare of his subjects.
The statement was issued amid a fresh controversy between the Alaafin and the Ooni, which started after the Alaafin criticised the Ooni’s decision to confer a title on a businessman.
The Alaafin emphasised that he operates a government that is judged by its results and prioritizes the prosperity, security, and well-being of his people.
According to the statement, the Alaafin’s administration is guided by the principles of humility, royalty, and a commitment to defending and protecting Yoruba norms and traditions.
The statement highlighted the historical significance of the Alaafin’s position, citing the Treaty of Cessation signed with the British, which recognized the Alaafin as the Superior Head of the Yoruba Nation.
The Alaafin reiterated that he does not need to engage in battles for supremacy with other monarchs, either in Yorubaland or elsewhere, and that his focus is on the welfare and development of his people.
“He (Alaafin) is a veritable custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, and has always taken into consideration the safety and welfare of his subjects and will never compromise tradition, culture and development of his people for a pot of porridge. The history has been so kind and friendly to Alaafin Owoade publicity since he ascended the throne of his forefathers, as he does not need to get into any battle for supremacy with any oba, either in Yorubaland or anywhere in the universe,” the statement reads partly.
