Anambra: 65-year-old in police net over illegal arms dealing

A 65-year-old man identified as Akpan Godwin has been arrested by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command over his alleged involvement in illegal arms dealing.

This was contained in a statement on Saturday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said Godwin was caught with 1,100 rounds of live ammunition in Nkpor, near Onitsha, the commercial centre of the state.

Ikenga said the suspect confessed to being involved in the illegal sale of ammunition and mentioned other individuals connected to the illicit trade.

According to the police image maker, Godwin was apprehended on Friday by operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad Akwuzu acting on credible information.

The statement read in part, “The Anambra State Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Akwuzu, acting on credible information on Friday, arrested one Akpan Godwin ‘m’, aged 65 years, in possession of 1,100 rounds of live ammunition in Nkpor, Onitsha.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being involved in the illegal sale of ammunition and mentioned other individuals connected to the illicit trade.

“Meanwhile the operatives have stepped up the investigation/manhunt to uncover and apprehend all accomplices. Further developments will be communicated.”
