The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned.
His resignation marks the end of his turbulent tenure as party leader which started about two years ago.
His resignation took effect immediately
He is expected to hand over to one of the party’s national vice chairmen, who will serve in an acting capacity until the party holds its convention in December.
Ganduje, who governed Kano State from 2015 to 2023, took over the APC’s leadership in August 2023 during a time of internal party crisis.
He explained that his decision to leave was based on his need to attend to health issues.
However, his exit is believed to go beyond health concerns.
Party insiders claimed that growing unrest among members and rising pressure from unresolved financial and political issues may have pushed him out.
Some APC members had earlier raised concerns over financial demands placed on aspirants, especially those contesting area council positions in the Federal Capital Territory.
His tenure as APC chairman was full of troubles.
He faced legal battles, including a court order in April 2024 from Kano State that briefly barred him from acting as a party member.
Another case seeking his removal, filed by the APC North Central Forum, was later thrown out by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The APC leadership has yet to release an official statement regarding Ganduje’s resignation.
As a result, questions are being asked about what direction the party will take next and how this development may affect its unity and structure going forward.
