Cheap labour: Sowore woos policemen to join protest

Nigerian human-rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called on both serving and retired police officers to join a protest he organised to combat no salary payment in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The activist said this on Tuesday, noting that the focus of the protest would be to demand an increase in salary for all officers, adding that no policeman should earn less than N300,000 to N500,000.

The protest is scheduled to be held on July 21, 2025, with a mantra, “Pay Police As They Deserve”.

He wrote, “To All Nigeria Police Officers — Serving and Retired. You have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to break free from slavery.

“No police officer should earn less than ₦300,000 to ₦500,000 monthly. Mark your calendars:
#POLICEProtest — July 21st, 2025.
This is your date with destiny. Stand up. Demand justice. Fight for your worth.”

Several Nigerians have campaigned against the low incomes earned by policemen in the country. It is often cited as a contributing factor to the alleged corruption and other issues within the force.

While there have been efforts to increase salaries, the current levels are still considered inadequate by many.

Police constables, who are often the first point of contact with the public, earn relatively low salaries which is around ₦ 43,923 per month.
