Couple, two others injured as intoxicated driver crashes bus into streetlight

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Sunday reported a lone vehicular crash involving a commercial bus with number plate KTU 69 YJ.

The accident occurred in the Alausa corridor of Ikeja.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver, who was impaired by alcohol, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a streetlight pole.

The impact resulted in significant injuries to several passengers, notably a couple seated in the middle row.

LASTMA operatives stationed nearby took four severely injured passengers, including the couple, along with one male and one female passenger, administered emergency care, and stabilised them before transferring them to the Lagos State Ambulance Service, which conveyed them to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at the old toll gate for specialised medical attention.

Throughout the rescue operation, officers of the Alausa Division of the Nigeria Police Force maintained a secured perimeter, ensuring the safety of responders and the preservation of the accident scene.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the endangerment caused by driving under the influence.

He reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering resolve to combat alcohol-impaired driving through continuous advocacy and surveillance.

Bakare-Oki emphasised that LASTMA’s Monitoring and Surveillance Unit remained actively engaged with drivers in motor parks across the state, reinforcing the agency’s signature campaign: “Don’t drink and drive.”

He extended heartfelt sympathies to the injured passengers and conveyed his earnest wishes for their swift and complete recovery.
