The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert for 11 states, warning that 32 locations across the country may experience heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding between September 14 and September 18, 2025.

The alert was issued Sunday by the Federal Ministry of Environment, National Flood Early Warning Centre, and signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani.

Flooding remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing environmental challenges, often resulting in displacement, destruction of farmlands, and outbreaks of waterborne diseases. In recent years, heavy rains have worsened flooding across multiple states, with thousands losing homes and livelihoods.

“The following locations and their environs are likely to witness heavy rainfall that MAY lead to flooding within the period of prediction: 14th – 18th September, 2025,” the statement read partly.

The affected areas were listed as, Adamawa State: Ganye, Natubi;
Benue State: Abinsi, Agyo, Gogo, Ito, Makurdi, Udoma, Ukpiam; Nasarawa State: Agima, Rukubi, Odogbo; Taraba State: Beli, Serti, Donga; Delta State: Umugboma, Umukwata, Abraka, Aboh, Okpo-Krika and Niger State: Rijau.

Others include, Kebbi State: Ribah; Kano State: Gwarzo, Karaye; Katsina State: Jibia; Sokoto State: Makira; and Zamfara State: Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Maradun, Gusau, Anka, Bungudu.

The FG also advised communities on the flood plain of River Gongola up to Numan, the flood plain of River Benue and River Niger up to Lokoja to vacate “due to the rise in the water level of River Gongola, River Benue, and Niger”.
