A Volkswagen Golf car crashed into a truck on the Zaria-Kano Expressway at Gadar Tamburawa, leading to the discovery of 112 kilograms of cannabis sativa.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday in Kano by Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The PRO said the incident occurred at about 6 a.m. on Sept. 6, when NDLEA operatives on patrol heard a loud noise indicating a collision.
He said, “Officers rushed to the scene to rescue the occupants of the Golf, removing its windscreen, window and door to extricate the driver and passenger.
“The passenger attempted to flee immediately after opening the door, but was apprehended by our operatives.
“A search of the Golf vehicle led to the discovery of 150 blocks and three sacks of loose cannabis sativa weighing 112kg.”
The driver, who sustained injuries, confessed to representing a consignor and making similar deliveries within and outside Kano, adding that he also admitted to using a one-way route in an attempt to evade NDLEA checkpoints.
“Initial reports indicated that the driver of the truck sustained a fracture in the crash. This incident involved two offences: one-way driving leading to a collision and trafficking in narcotics,” he said.
The spokesperson said the command under the leadership of its State Commander, Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, would pursue the prosecution of those involved in drug trafficking.
The NDLEA has commended the prompt and professional conduct of the patrol officers involved in the rescue and recovery, and has advised the public to desist from drug trafficking and report suspicious movements of illicit substances to the agency.
