The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is embroiled in a leadership crisis, with the factional National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, asserting that its 2023 presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has no authority to negotiate alliances for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Major’s statement comes after Kwankwaso expressed openness to alliances at a meeting of his Kwankwasiyya group in Abuja on Thursday.
The NNPP has been plagued by internal conflicts, with the party writing to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise its legitimate leadership.
Major’s faction claims that Kwankwaso’s Memorandum of Understanding with the party expired after the 2023 general elections and that he has been expelled for alleged anti-party activities.
Major, in a statement he signed on Friday in Lagos, described a recent National Executive Council meeting convened by Kwankwaso as null and void, stating that decisions made therein cannot alter the party’s resolutions or court judgments on the NNPP leadership. He warned that any alliances made with Kwankwaso would be done at the parties’ own risk.
The NNPP factional chairman emphasised that the party is open to alliances with sister parties but not for personal vendettas. He urged INEC to recognise the rule of law and order in civil society and take necessary actions to resolve the party’s leadership crisis.
