As the world celebrates the 2025 World Environment Day today (Thursday) with the theme: ‘Putting an End to Plastic Pollution’, the Nigeria Environmental Society, Abeokuta chapter, has called on residents of the state to put an end to plastic pollution and its menace on the environment for a cleaner, healthier and safer society.
The Chairman of the society, Alhaji Badmus Jamiu, made the call in a statement in Abeokuta to mark the day.
According to him, although plastic is very useful to human existence and serves as source of livelihood to millions, when it gets into the environment is hazardous as it stays longer and fail to degrade, thereby causing untold environmental menace.
He said, “Aside from these, plastic pollution also constitutes health risk particularly to aquatic life, which will invariably come back to the society; so there is the need for residents of the state to put an end to plastic pollution by properly managing their plastic waste and latch on to different government initiatives such as the Blue Box Programme championed by the Ogun State Government.
“Our people should also try as much as possible to separate plastics from their waste for onward sale to recyclers near them instead of mixing them with the normal waste, thereby saving the environment of their hazards.”
While wishing residents of the state a hitch-free World Environment Day celebration, Jamiu also used the opportunity to counsel residents of the state to take issues of the environment seriously as it is where we all live, depend on for survival while life expectancy also depends on it, so the need for it to be treated with utmost care and respect.
