The Abeokuta branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) is urging the Ogun State government to embrace renewable energy, citing benefits for businesses, carbon emission cuts, and economic boost.
Speaking on Tuesday, the branch chairman, Olumayowa Idowu, advised that switching to renewable energy would cut emissions, reduce pollution, and fuel productive activities, ultimately boosting the local economy.
Idowu highlighted that Ogun, with its mix of industrial hubs and residential areas, is primed to pioneer solar energy adoption.
Speaking at the launch of a 6,000W solar-powered inverter system and an 18-seater Ford Transit bus, the chairman emphasized that scaling this model across major state offices could cut dependence on diesel generators, especially in areas with frequent power cuts.
He said, “Nigeria is entering a new phase where renewable energy is no longer optional—it is essential.
“Ogun State has the potential to lead in solar adoption with its industrial clusters and residential estates. If we scale renewable solutions, we will improve reliability, support businesses, reduce carbon emissions, and drive economic growth.”
According to him, renewable energy will also assist households and companies in reducing operating costs, which will result in long-term savings on fuel consumption and electricity tariffs.
He noted that the society is committed to supporting government infrastructure and development initiatives, promoting innovation, digital transformation, and raising the next generation of vibrant, competent young engineers.
Meanwhile, he urged his colleagues to continue to innovate, collaborate, and embrace sustainable practices that can transform the society.
