Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Honourable Kingsley Fanwo, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, who recently passed away after a prolonged illness.

In a statement on Wednesday, Fanwo recalled fond memories of the Kogi-born singer, revealing that she had sent him a touching video message on his birthday three years ago, which had left a lasting impression on him.

He also reminisced about her electrifying performance in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, less than two years ago, where she had wowed the audience with her energy and talent.

Fanwo expressed his admiration for the singer, stating that he was one of her biggest fans and had maintained close contact with her. He particularly mentioned her song “Oti Murewa” as a favourite, highlighting the impact her music had had on him and many others.

The Commissioner revealed that he had spoken with Akinnanu’s cousin just a day before her passing, and was aware of the gravity of her condition. In his tribute, Fanwo bid a sorrowful farewell to his friend and fellow Kogite, saying, “Evangelist Bunmi, you were phenomenal and you changed lives with your songs. You are now with the Angels to do what gives you joy. Goodnight to a good friend.”

The singer died in the late hours of Tuesday.

Her demise was announced on Tuesday evening via a terse statement shared on Instagram by her colleague Ayo Melody on behalf of her family.

The post, which was accompanied by a picture of the late singer and a video of her remains, revealed that she died in a Lagos hospital.

“With great sadness we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnanu Adeoye (OMIJE OJUMI), who passed away on 12th January 2026 at a Lagos hospital in Nigeria,” it reads.
