85-year-old woman drags son to court over property documents

An 85-year-old woman, Mrs. Henrietta Fawehinmi, has taken her son, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, to court over property documents in Rivers State.

Mrs. Fawehinmi is asking the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt to order her son to return the original title documents of her properties in the state.

Professor Fawehinmi is a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt and currently the Vice-Chancellor of a university in Abuja.

The dispute started when Professor Fawehinmi and his sister, Oluwafumi, sued a man named Ichie Ikenna-Onu, who bought one of their mother’s properties.

They claim the sale was invalid, but their mother says she’s the rightful owner and had sold the property to Ikenna-Onu.

Mrs. Fawehinmi says she’s paid her son ₦82 million for the return of the documents, but he’s refused.

She claims she’s the owner of the properties and had given them to her children, but later revoked the gift due to conflicts.

She’s accused her son of abandoning her in old age and pressuring her to transfer the properties to him.

Mrs. Fawehinmi says she’s sponsored her son’s education and established a hospital for him, but he’s failed to support her.

The properties in question include those located at Orominike Layout, Nwachukwu Street, Emenike Close, and Elekahia Housing Estate, all in Port Harcourt.

Ichie Ikenna-Onu, the defendant, denies knowledge of the claims and asks the court to dismiss the suit, calling it a “gold-digging” exercise.

The court will determine the ownership of the properties and whether Professor Fawehinmi must return the documents to his mother.
