The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has welcomed members to the 86th Meeting of the Board, emphasising the need for wisdom, institutional memory, and calm reflection as the party navigates a critical juncture in its history.
In his welcome address on Wednesday, Senator Ohuabunwa highlighted the party’s recent achievements, including the successful conduct of ward and local government congresses, which were largely peaceful and transparent.
He expressed optimism that the forthcoming state congresses would further consolidate the party’s internal reorganisation and strengthen its structures across the federation.
“The PDP possesses the resilience, depth, and national spread required to overcome difficulties and emerge stronger,” Senator Ohuabunwa said, stressing the party’s ability to navigate challenges.
The Chairman also noted that preparations were underway for the party’s National Convention, scheduled for March 29th and 30th, which would provide an opportunity for the party to reposition itself and reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles, unity, and national service.
Senator Ohuabunwa said the importance of respecting the rule of law and the party’s constitution, referencing recent Court of Appeal judgments that had affirmed the legality of the National Caretaker Committee led by Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed.
“As the Board of Trustees, we are not merely participants in party affairs; we are the custodians of its soul, its values, and its constitutional integrity,” he stated.
The Board of Trustees also stressed the need for strengthening the party’s membership base through the ongoing electronic registration of party members, urging party leaders to mobilise and encourage members to participate in the exercise.
“A strong and properly documented membership is fundamental to building a more organised, responsive, and formidable party as we continue to reposition the PDP for greater national service,” Senator Ohuabunwa said.
Senator Ohuabunwa called on members to approach deliberations with open minds, a spirit of reconciliation, and a commitment to strengthening the party’s unity and stability.
The meeting is expected to provide guidance, promote unity, and ensure that the party’s decisions protect its long-term interests and those of the Nigerian people.
