The immediate past senator who represented the Federal Capital Territory on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Philip Aduda, has resigned his membership of the party.
The development was announced in a letter dated March 17, 2026 and addressed to the chairman of the party in Karu Ward, Abuja.
In the letter titled, “Notice of resignation of my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)” Aduda wrote, “I write to formally notify you of my resignation as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect due to the crisis in the party.
“I remain grateful for the opportunity the party gave me to serve in various elective positions in our nation.
“Please, accept the assurances of my high esteem.”
Recent defections from the PDP to other political parties in the Senate have significantly altered the political landscape.
Three senators, Amos Yohanna (Adamawa North), Aminu Iyal Abbas (Adamawa Central), and Ikra Aliyu Bilbis (Zamfara North), defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), consolidating the ruling party’s dominance with 84 senators.
This move is seen as a blow to the PDP, reducing their strength from 17 to 14 members in the Senate.
The defections are attributed to internal crises within the PDP, with senators citing leadership instability and structural failures as reasons for their exit.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio linked the trend to improved governance at the federal level, stating that the PDP had “emptied itself” into the APC.
In another development, five PDP senators defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), making it the main opposition party in the Senate with nine senators.
The ADC’s gain comes as the PDP struggles with internal divisions, leading to a shift in the balance of power in the Senate.
