The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group has dismissed as false and malicious a viral social media publication alleging that its Group Chairman, Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, has divorced his wife.

The statement was issued on Sunday by Alero Ladipo, Group Head, Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, United Bank for Africa, Lagos.

In the statement, the bank described the claims as entirely fabricated, reckless, and designed to mislead the public while causing reputational damage to Mr. Elumelu and the institution. UBA stressed that the publication and similar content circulating online have no basis in fact.

The financial institution further disclosed that the matter has been reported to relevant law enforcement authorities, who have commenced investigations. It confirmed that three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and spread of the false information have been arrested.

The suspects were identified as Mr. Kingsley Akunemeihe, Mr. Chigozie Success Ihebom, and Mr. John Surpruchi Nwanorue.

According to the bank, investigations are ongoing and may result in further arrests and prosecutions of persons involved in originating or amplifying the alleged defamatory campaign.

UBA also issued a stern warning to individuals, platforms, and entities currently sharing or reposting the content, demanding the immediate removal of all related publications and urging them to desist from further dissemination.

It added that all digital records, communications, and metadata connected to the spread of the information should be preserved for possible legal proceedings.

The bank warned that failure to comply with the directive could lead to legal action, including defamation claims, injunctive relief, and damages under applicable laws.

Reaffirming its position, UBA said it remains committed to protecting the reputation, privacy, and integrity of its leadership and brand, and will pursue both civil and criminal remedies against those found responsible for the publication and circulation of the false claims.
