Malami: Atiku accuses Tinubu of strangling democracy

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of eroding democratic principles, alleging that Nigeria is drifting towards authoritarian rule.

In a statement issued on Monday by his media office, Atiku condemned the reported raid by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on properties linked to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

He described the action as “lawless, vindictive and politically motivated,” particularly as it reportedly occurred shortly after he visited Malami at his Abuja residence following the latter’s release on bail over alleged money laundering charges.

According to Atiku, the move raises concerns about the use of state institutions to target perceived political opponents.

“This is not governance. This is intimidation. This is a regime weaponising state power to silence dissent,” he said.

The former vice-president warned that the country is witnessing what he called a steady erosion of democratic norms, alleging that security agencies are increasingly being deployed for political purposes rather than national security.

“What we are seeing is the naked abuse of power. This is how democracies decline,” he added.

Atiku further claimed that recent actions against opposition figures, including former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai and Malami, suggest a broader attempt to weaken opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He alleged that such developments could discourage political competition and undermine the credibility of future elections if not addressed.

Drawing parallels with past political events in Nigeria, Atiku cautioned against actions that could threaten democratic stability, urging adherence to the rule of law and respect for political plurality.

He also raised concerns about the alleged use of anti-corruption efforts as a tool for political pressure, warning that coercion of opposition figures could weaken the country’s democratic institutions.

Atiku concluded by stressing the importance of protecting citizens’ freedom of choice, noting that credible elections and open political competition remain central to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.
