Proceedings in the trial of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai took a new turn on Tuesday as a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna deferred ruling on his bail application until March 31, 2026.

The adjournment followed a heated exchange between the defence and prosecution, both of which presented arguments for and against granting the former governor temporary release.

Counsel to El-Rufai, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to exercise its discretion in favour of his client, arguing that bail is a constitutional right and necessary to enable him adequately prepare for his defence. He maintained that the former governor is not a flight risk and would comply with any conditions imposed by the court.

But the prosecution pushed back, insisting that the nature of the charges against El-Rufai is grave. It warned that granting bail at this stage could jeopardise ongoing investigations, urging the court to prioritise the integrity of the judicial process.

The case has drawn significant public attention, given El-Rufai’s political profile and influence. He served as governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023 and remains a prominent figure in national politics, particularly within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His current legal troubles stem from allegations linked to actions taken during his time in office, although full details of the charges are still unfolding in court. The development has sparked debate among political observers and legal experts, with many closely watching how the judiciary navigates the high-stakes case.

With arguments on the bail application now concluded, all eyes are on the court’s next sitting, where a decision will be made on whether the former governor will regain temporary freedom or remain in custody as the trial progresses.
