President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday marked his 74th birthday in a notably low-key manner, deliberately scaling down celebrations in consideration of the nation’s current realities and economic challenges.
In a State House statement personally signed by the President, Tinubu said his decision to observe the occasion quietly was in keeping with his longstanding tradition of aligning personal celebrations with the prevailing mood of the country.
“Consistent with my tradition of marking my birthday in line with the mood of the nation, I resolved to observe this year’s birthday in a low-key manner,” he stated, signalling a conscious departure from elaborate festivities often associated with milestone birthdays.
Despite the subdued nature of the celebration, the President expressed profound gratitude to Nigerians for the overwhelming goodwill, prayers, and messages he received from across the country. He specifically acknowledged individuals and organisations who took out space in newspapers and sponsored airtime on radio and television to celebrate him.
Tinubu also extended appreciation to his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, for her warm words, as well as to Vice President Kashim Shettima for his tribute.
The President’s modest observance comes against the backdrop of ongoing economic reforms and national challenges, which he referenced in his message. He noted that while Nigerians have made significant sacrifices, there are emerging signs of progress, describing it as “a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.”
He also pointed to external pressures, including the ongoing Middle East crisis, as factors contributing to temporary setbacks, but maintained that the country remains on a path toward recovery.
Tinubu stressed that the gains recorded so far are a collective achievement, not limited to his administration or the Renewed Hope team, but made possible through the resilience and cooperation of Nigerians.
As his administration approaches its third anniversary, the President reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the nation’s challenges and steering it toward stability and growth. He expressed optimism that with sustained public support, Nigeria would overcome its current difficulties.
The decision to keep his birthday observance simple, analysts say, underscores an attempt by the President to demonstrate empathy and solidarity with citizens navigating tough economic conditions, while reinforcing his message of shared sacrifice and collective progress.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to remain united and committed to building a stronger, more resilient nation, adding a personal note of appreciation: “Thank you all, and happy 74th birthday to me.”
