Pep Guardiola has announced that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the current season, bringing to a close a transformative decade that reshaped the club and left a lasting imprint on English football.

The Spanish tactician confirmed his decision on Friday in a club statement, ending months of speculation over his future at the Etihad Stadium.

During his 10-year spell at Manchester City, Guardiola won 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League triumph, cementing City’s status as one of Europe’s dominant football forces.

His final match in charge is expected to be Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium, after which he is set to continue within the City Football Group structure as a global ambassador.

Reflecting on his departure, Guardiola said it was a personal decision taken after careful consideration.

“What a time we have had together! Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time,” he said.

“Nothing is eternal. If it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City.”

Guardiola’s exit marks the end of one of the most successful managerial eras in modern football. Since arriving in England, he has delivered sustained domestic dominance, adding to a trophy haul that also includes three FA Cups, five League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and three Community Shields.

Before joining City in 2016, Guardiola had already established himself as one of the game’s elite coaches, winning two UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga crowns with Barcelona between 2008 and 2012, before adding three Bundesliga titles during his time at Bayern Munich.

Initially expected to have a shorter tenure in England, his long stay has instead redefined Manchester City’s identity and influence. Under his leadership, the club rose from domestic contenders to a dominant European powerhouse, backed by significant investment and a distinctive style of possession-based football that has influenced coaching trends across the game.

Several of his former assistants and players have since gone on to manage top clubs, with Mikel Arteta leading Arsenal to end their long Premier League title drought, while other coaches such as Arne Slot and Xabi Alonso have also acknowledged the influence of Guardiola’s philosophy on their careers.

His departure also comes at a time when Manchester City is still awaiting the outcome of an ongoing investigation into alleged breaches of financial regulations by the Premier League, a case that has cast a shadow over the club’s recent achievements.

News of Guardiola’s exit signals the end of a defining chapter in Manchester City’s history, with attention now turning to his successor and the future direction of the club.
