Xabi Alonso has described his appointment as Chelsea F.C. manager as a moment of “immense pride,” saying he is determined to lead the club into a new era of sustained success following his official unveiling as head coach of the men’s team.

The Premier League club confirmed that the Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, after signing a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the managerial position.

Chelsea praised Alonso’s rapid rise in coaching, pointing to his remarkable spell with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he led the German side to their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season, going unbeaten throughout the league campaign.

The club also referenced his earlier experience with Real Madrid CF in shaping his tactical development and leadership approach.

Speaking after the announcement, Alonso said he was honoured to take charge of one of the most prestigious clubs in world football, stressing that shared ambition with the club’s leadership was central to his decision.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” he said.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

He added that the club’s existing talent pool and long-term potential made the opportunity even more compelling.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

Alonso, a former Spanish international, enjoyed a decorated playing career that included 17 major trophies and a World Cup triumph with the FIFA World Cup as part of the Spain national football team.

Chelsea said it is confident Alonso’s arrival marks the beginning of a new phase aimed at restoring consistent domestic and European success at Stamford Bridge.
