Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), receiving his membership card on Monday in Kano State.
The move confirms earlier speculation about his departure from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which he formally announced on Sunday.
Kwankwaso’s defection is widely seen as part of a broader political realignment as stakeholders position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In anticipation of his formal entry into the party, a high-level ADC delegation arrived in Kano earlier on Monday.
The team was led by the party’s National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark, alongside notable figures including former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Senator Dino Melaye; and former APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, among others.
The delegation landed at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, where they were received by the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.
Sources indicate that Kwankwaso is expected to move into the ADC alongside several key allies, including Senator Rufa’i Hanga and the Kano State NNPP Chairman, Hashim Dungurawa.
In his resignation statement from the NNPP, Kwankwaso described his decision as “difficult but necessary,” pointing to the changing political landscape and the need to align with a new platform ahead of future electoral contests.
