I didn’t endorse any candidate for Rivers polls, says Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that he has thrown his weight behind any aspirant ahead of future elections in Rivers State, stressing that such decisions will be made collectively by party leaders.

He made the clarification during a meeting with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party from Rivers, held at his residence in Life Camp, Abuja.

Speaking at the gathering on Monday night, Wike cautioned party members against premature lobbying and endorsement campaigns, warning that personal ambitions could destabilise the political structure they have built.

He made it clear that his only firm political commitment at the moment is support for President Bola Tinubu.

“I have not promised anybody support. The only commitment I have made is that we are going to support President Bola Tinubu,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor attributed the group’s current influence to unity and cooperation rather than financial strength, alleging that certain interests were uncomfortable with their cohesion and were attempting to sow discord.

He also criticised beneficiaries of political appointments who have turned against the leadership, warning against disloyalty within the ranks.

Reiterating his stance, Wike said he has neither publicly nor privately endorsed any candidate for positions in Rivers State, insisting that any eventual decision would follow consultations with party elders.

He maintained that his positions remain consistent at all times, adding that transparency has always guided his actions.

His remarks come amid lingering political tension between him and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Once close allies, their relationship deteriorated shortly after Fubara assumed office in 2023, triggering a protracted crisis that drew the intervention of President Tinubu.

With the 2027 elections approaching, uncertainty continues to surround potential alignments and the future of political leadership in the state.
