Ghana sack head coach Addo after poor run of results

Ghana have dismissed head coach Otto Addo just over two months before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision comes in the wake of a string of disappointing results, including a 2-1 loss to Germany in a friendly match in Stuttgart on Monday and a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna last Friday.

The back-to-back setbacks extended the Black Stars’ losing streak to four matches.

Despite boasting key attacking talents such as Antoine Semenyo of Manchester City and Mohammed Kudus of Tottenham Hotspur, Ghana endured a difficult spell under Addo, which also saw them fail to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a brief statement issued after the defeat to Germany, the Ghana Football Association confirmed that it had “parted ways” with the 50-year-old coach with immediate effect, adding that plans regarding the team’s new technical direction would be announced soon.

Addo, who was born in Germany and spent his playing career there, earned 15 caps for Ghana during his international career. He returned for a second stint as head coach in March 2024.

The upcoming World Cup, set to be hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States, will run from June 11 to July 19. Ghana are scheduled to begin their campaign against Panama on June 18, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
