Bwala berates Obi over party defections, questions leadership credentials

A presidential aide, Daniel Bwala, on Tuesday blasted a former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over what he described as a pattern of “nomadic politics” and shifting party loyalties.

Bwala’s remarks, posted on his verified social media account, followed Obi’s recent appearance on Arise Television, where the former Labour Party presidential candidate addressed questions about his political trajectory and party affiliations.

In the post, Bwala accused Obi of lacking consistency and questioned his suitability for national leadership, citing his movement across multiple political platforms, including the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and more recently, alleged ties to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“Yesterday on Arise TV, Gregory @PeterObi was asked a question about his nomadic politics. APGA, PDP, Labour, ADC and soon to be another political party. His answers showed how awful his character and philosophy is. He said anytime there is problem, he jumps away because the problem was created for him. Imagine the character that said he wants to govern Nigeria?” Bwala wrote.

He further described the development as embarrassing for Obi’s supporters, adding, “Today is a day devoted to swallowing shame by the Obidient globally: WORLD SHAME DAY.”

The criticism stems from Obi’s explanation during the television interview, where he defended his political decisions and party movements.

The former Anambra governor maintained that his actions were driven by principle rather than personal ambition, stressing that he would not remain in any political environment where he felt constrained from delivering value or where internal challenges hindered progress.

Obi, who began his political career in APGA and served as governor of Anambra State under the platform, later moved to the PDP ahead of the 2019 general elections, where he emerged as the vice-presidential candidate. In 2022, he defected to the Labour Party, citing the need for a platform that aligned with his reform agenda and allowed him to pursue his presidential ambition.

During the Arise TV interview, Obi suggested that political parties in Nigeria often face systemic issues that make it difficult for reform-minded actors to operate effectively.

He argued that his decisions to leave certain platforms were informed by a desire to remain consistent with his values and commitment to good governance.

However, Bwala interpreted those remarks differently, insisting they reflected a tendency to abandon challenges rather than confront them.
